Cosmic Daydream. Now there’s a beer name that gets my attention. It sounds like something I expect to find in a science-fiction movie rather than the beer aisle. But here it is, an American IPA from Four Peaks Brewing Company in Tempe, Arizona, promising tropical fruit, citrus, and even a little coconut.
And naturally, I have one concern. It’s an IPA.
I’m not generally an IPA drinker. I lean toward wheat beers and pilsners, so a beer loaded with hops doesn’t automatically excite me. But Cosmic Daydream has something interesting going for it: Four Peaks builds this beer on a crisp pilsner malt foundation. Now we’re speaking a little more of my language.
If Cosmic Daydream already earns a place among your favorite Arizona beers, cast your vote here and help it compete in the Arizona beer rankings.
Four Peaks doesn’t hold back on the hop selection for Cosmic Daydream. The brewery uses Strata, Citra, Motueka, and Sabro hops, each contributing to the beer’s overall character.
That’s quite a lineup, but what interests me isn’t the number of hops. It’s what they bring to the beer.
The brewery describes a combination of tropical fruit, zesty citrus, and subtle coconut notes. Those flavors sound more like something I expect from a tropical vacation than a traditional IPA.
I find the coconut especially interesting. It’s not a flavor I normally associate with beer, but Sabro hops can contribute coconut-like characteristics without requiring the beer to taste like an actual coconut drink.
For me, the question is simple: do all these flavors complement each other, or does one overpower everything else?
Here’s the detail that makes me pay closer attention.
Four Peaks uses pilsner malt as the foundation for Cosmic Daydream. That doesn’t turn it into a pilsner, of course, but it helps explain the brewery’s emphasis on a lighter, crisper drinking experience.
Since pilsners are one of my favorite beer styles, I appreciate the idea of an IPA that starts with a relatively clean malt base rather than something heavy and overly sweet.
According to Four Peaks Brewing Company, the beer combines its bright hop bitterness with a smooth, clean finish.
That combination sounds appealing. I don’t mind interesting flavors in a beer. I just prefer when those flavors don’t leave me dealing with an unpleasant aftertaste.
Now let’s talk about the numbers, because Cosmic Daydream carries a little more punch than its light, refreshing description might suggest.
At 7.2% ABV, this beer contains considerably more alcohol than a typical 5% lager. That’s something I pay attention to when choosing what to drink.
Its 45 IBU rating also tells me to expect noticeable hop bitterness. That’s not necessarily extreme for an American IPA, but it’s certainly higher than the wheat beers I normally prefer.
Still, I know that IBU doesn’t tell the entire story. Malt balance, hop varieties, and the beer’s overall character influence how bitter it actually tastes.
What interests me most is whether Cosmic Daydream delivers enough tropical flavor and a clean enough finish to make that bitterness enjoyable.
I see two types of beer drinkers who might find Cosmic Daydream interesting.
First, there’s the dedicated IPA enthusiast who enjoys experimenting with different hop combinations. Four hop varieties and a tropical flavor profile give that drinker plenty to explore.
Then there’s someone like me, who doesn’t normally reach for an IPA but occasionally wants to try something outside the usual comfort zone.
The pilsner malt foundation catches my attention, while the citrus and coconut notes make me curious about how the beer comes together.
I’m not going to pretend that a tropical description automatically changes my opinion about IPAs. But I also don’t believe in dismissing a beer simply because of its style.
What I appreciate about Cosmic Daydream is that Four Peaks gives this IPA a distinct identity. It doesn’t rely on bitterness alone to define the experience.
The combination of tropical hop aromas, pilsner malt, and a clean finish gives me something specific to look for when evaluating this beer.
Do I expect it to replace my favorite wheat beers? Probably not. But that’s not really the point.
I want to explore Arizona craft beer with an open mind, even when a particular style isn’t my first choice. Cosmic Daydream offers an interesting combination of ingredients, and I’m curious about how they translate into the glass.
Ultimately, I care more about whether a beer is enjoyable than whether it belongs to my favorite category.
Here’s where I want your opinion.
Maybe you’re a big IPA fan and Cosmic Daydream is exactly what you enjoy. Maybe the tropical flavors make it stand out from other Four Peaks beers. Or perhaps you prefer a completely different Arizona IPA.
Either way, I want to see what Arizona beer drinkers think.
