Four Peaks WOW Wheat Beer Review – Now This Is My Kind of Beer!

Some people get excited about a double IPA loaded with hops. Me? Give me a refreshing wheat beer with a little citrus flavor, and you’ve already got my attention. That’s why WOW Wheat from Four Peaks Brewing Company in Tempe, Arizona, is right up my alley.

I’m a wheat beer guy. I like beers that are smooth, refreshing, and don’t leave me fighting through a bitter aftertaste. WOW Wheat checks several of those boxes on paper, especially with its sweet orange peel and soft wheat character.

And with a name like WOW, I have to wonder: does this beer really live up to its name?

Orange Peel Is the Star of the Show

Four Peaks brews WOW Wheat as an American-style wheat ale using sweet orange peel and its signature house yeast. The brewery describes bright citrus flavors balanced by a soft wheat body, followed by a crisp, fruity finish.

What I like about that combination is the simplicity. I’m not looking for a dozen competing flavors in every beer. Sometimes a good wheat beer with a little orange character is exactly what sounds appealing.

The orange peel also gives WOW Wheat something that separates it from a basic American wheat ale. Instead of relying entirely on the grain and yeast, the citrus adds another layer of flavor without turning the beer into a fruit cocktail.

Only 8 IBU? That’s Music to My Ears

Here’s a number that immediately makes me smile: 8 IBU.

For anyone unfamiliar with the term, IBU stands for International Bitterness Units. It’s a measurement of bitterness in beer, although the actual taste also depends on the balance of ingredients.

At just 8 IBU, WOW Wheat sits firmly on the low end of the bitterness scale. That’s exactly the kind of number I like seeing when I’m choosing a beer.

It also comes in at 5.0% ABV, which puts it in a familiar range for a regular-strength beer. I don’t need something with 8% or 10% alcohol to enjoy a good craft brew.

For me, flavor and drinkability matter a lot more than how much alcohol a brewery can squeeze into a can.

A Wheat Beer That Makes Sense in Arizona

Living in Arizona, I know how appealing a cold, refreshing beer sounds when temperatures climb. And that’s where a citrus wheat ale like WOW Wheat makes a lot of sense.

I can picture this beer alongside a burger, some grilled chicken, or a plate of tacos. The orange character and wheat base sound like a natural fit for casual food without overwhelming the meal.

I’m also a fan of beers that don’t require a lengthy explanation. If I recommend something to a friend, I want to be able to describe it in everyday language.

With WOW Wheat, that description is pretty straightforward: an American wheat beer with orange peel, low bitterness, and a refreshing citrus character.

What Makes Four Peaks WOW Wheat Stand Out?

Four Peaks Brewing Company offers several recognizable Arizona beers, including Kilt Lifter and Hop Knot. But WOW Wheat occupies a different spot in the lineup.

It isn’t trying to be a big, bold IPA or a rich, malt-heavy ale. Instead, it focuses on wheat beer drinkers who appreciate citrus flavor and an approachable drinking experience.

I appreciate that because not every beer needs to push the limits of bitterness, alcohol content, or unusual ingredients.

Sometimes I just want to enjoy a cold beer without having to think too hard about what’s in my glass.

My Opinion: WOW Wheat Speaks My Language

Of all the beer styles available, wheat beers remain near the top of my personal favorites. That’s why WOW Wheat immediately interests me more than many of the IPAs I come across.

The sweet orange peel, low bitterness, and moderate alcohol content all fit the kind of beer I naturally gravitate toward.

Of course, I don’t expect everyone to agree with my preferences. Some beer drinkers want more hops, stronger flavors, or a completely different style.

That’s what makes craft beer interesting. There’s something for just about everyone, and I don’t believe one person’s taste should determine which beer deserves recognition.
