Four Peaks Kilt Lifter Beer Review – An Arizona Classic With a Scottish Twist

When people talk about Arizona craft beer, one name seems to come up again and again: Kilt Lifter from Four Peaks Brewing Company. And there’s a good reason for that. This Scottish-style amber ale is one of the brewery’s signature beers and a familiar sight in bars, restaurants, and stores throughout Arizona.

Now, I’m usually a wheat beer or pilsner kind of guy. But I don’t limit myself to those styles. Sometimes I want something with a little more body, a different flavor, and a personality of its own. That’s where Kilt Lifter gets my attention.

It’s not an IPA, it doesn’t try to overwhelm me with hops, and it brings something completely different to the table.

So What’s the Big Deal About Kilt Lifter?

Four Peaks Brewing Company calls Kilt Lifter its flagship beer, and it’s easy to understand why the brewery takes pride in it. This Scottish-style ale is built around rich malt flavors rather than the aggressive hop bitterness found in many American IPAs.

Its amber color gives it a distinctive appearance, while the brewery describes a combination of caramel, roasted barley, toffee, and subtle smoky notes.

What interests me is how those flavors fit together. Caramel and toffee suggest sweetness, but roasted barley and a dry finish help give this beer a more balanced character.

For someone who doesn’t particularly enjoy bitter beers, a malt-focused ale like Kilt Lifter sounds much more inviting than something loaded with hops.

Caramel, Toast, and a Little Smoke

One thing I find appealing about Scottish-style ales is their emphasis on malt. Instead of trying to deliver a punch of citrus or pine from the hops, these beers often focus on flavors that remind me of toasted bread, caramel, and roasted grains.

Kilt Lifter follows that tradition. Four Peaks describes a full-bodied beer with malty sweetness and a clean, dry finish.

That little hint of smokiness is especially interesting. I’m not looking for a beer that tastes like a campfire, but a subtle smoky character can add something different without taking over the entire experience.

I also appreciate that this beer doesn’t need unusual ingredients or a complicated recipe description to explain its personality. It’s a Scottish-style ale that puts malt front and center.

How Strong Is Four Peaks Kilt Lifter?

Kilt Lifter comes in at 6.0% ABV with approximately 21 IBU. Those numbers tell me a couple of things.

First, it carries a little more alcohol than many standard light beers. Second, its bitterness level is relatively modest compared with the IPAs I normally avoid.

Of course, IBU doesn’t tell me everything about a beer’s flavor. A beer with 21 IBU can still taste different depending on its malt sweetness, body, and overall balance.

For me, Kilt Lifter’s combination of rich malt character and moderate bitterness is what makes it worth considering.

Thirty Years of Arizona Brewing History

Here’s something I find especially interesting about Kilt Lifter: this beer represents a big part of Arizona’s craft brewing history.

Four Peaks Brewing Company celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2026, and Kilt Lifter remains closely connected to the brewery’s identity.

According to Four Peaks, Kilt Lifter ranks as Arizona’s top-selling local craft beer in 2025. That’s a pretty impressive accomplishment in a state with so many breweries competing for attention.

But popularity alone doesn’t determine whether I enjoy a beer. Just because thousands of people buy something doesn’t automatically mean it’s going to become my favorite.

Still, I respect a beer that maintains that kind of following while the craft beer industry continues to change.

Where Does Kilt Lifter Fit Into My Beer Preferences?

When I’m choosing a beer, I usually want something refreshing and easy to enjoy. Wheat beers and pilsners tend to fit that description for me.

Kilt Lifter offers a different experience. Its richer malt profile and fuller body make it something I approach differently from my usual choices.

I can see why someone who enjoys amber ales, Scottish ales, or malt-forward beers might find this one appealing. It also sounds like a natural companion to barbecue, burgers, or grilled meats.

And while I’m not someone who automatically reaches for a Scottish ale, I appreciate having options that don’t revolve around intense hop bitterness.

That’s one of the things I enjoy about exploring Arizona craft beer. I don’t have to stick with the same style every time.

Is Kilt Lifter Really One of Arizona’s Best Beers?

That’s a question I don’t think any single reviewer gets to answer for everyone.

Kilt Lifter has an established reputation, a long history, and plenty of recognition. But what interests me most is how it compares with other Arizona beers in the eyes of everyday drinkers.

Does its caramel and roasted malt character make it your favorite? Do you choose it over other amber ales? Or is there another Four Peaks beer you prefer?

I have my own preferences, but I don’t expect everyone to agree with me. That’s why I like giving Arizona beer drinkers a chance to make their opinions count.
